Heard really great things about this place from my mom. Went for lunch and got the farmer's salad with ranch instead of the balsamic vig. dressing. So fresh and delicious! Love the use of fried okra on the salad instead of croutons (maybe that was intentional) - either way it was delicious. Very pleased. *Side note: Update the online menu though!

Great food although the atmosphere isn't the best being in a strip mall next to the city hall. The tomato soup and havarti grilled cheese is really delicious and the portion is huge. Their panko chicken salad plate is nice and well prepared. Amazing fresh bread starter is NOT to be missed. Would go there just for that....if I wanted to gain weight really quickly....I would likely eat two loaves.

Still a 3. Lobster ravioli was okay. Shrimp was really chewy. Martini really good, but not quite up to Highlands standards. Service was good. A tip for those of you who plan on going this winter. The dining area in Bistro V is spread out over two separate rooms. One room has hardwood floors and has a warm and cozy feel to it. The other is white ceramic tile. We had the bad luck of being seated not just in the white tile room, but next to the windows. As a result, we were so freaking cold that we had to dine in our coats, giving our meal kind of a Nanook of The North theme. Then again, our chattering teeth aided the chewing process, so there's that.

Great atmosphere, but I think the food is just ok. This place was pretty empty on a Monday night. The restaurant is split between a more bar/lounge atmosphere side and a restaurant side. I was on the restaurant side with just one other table. I love the more casual feel of the place. It definitely is not snobby at all. I ended up getting the Scallops. It came with grits and spinach. I really wanted to love this dish, but there was a sour taste to it that I really didn't like. It seemed to permeate everything but the scallops. The scallops were big and succulent, the grits were just ok, but nothing to write home about. it was the tangy flavor that really got me. It ruined this dish for me. Usually scallops are my go to that I always enjoy, so this dish surprised me. I would definitely try this place again, but it is not high on my list to go back to.

I visited Bistro V this past Thursday night for a friend's birthday celebration. I really enjoyed the food, but the service and pricing definitely left something to be desired. First, I split the Caesar salad starter with a friend, only to be charged $3 split charge for an already $9 salad, which I found a bit ridiculous. The salad was nothing special and definitely not as large as I was told or I would not have split it in the first place! (Note that the split chats was listed on the menu, but my interpretation was that it applied to entrees only.) For my entree, I had the braised short ribs which were very good--tender and flavorful. Our server was not the most prompt nor did she have the best attitude, and in my opinion, this was mostly because she knew she was getting the automatically added gratuity for a party of six or more; we had eight people. I might or might not go back as there are several other places in Birmingham that fall into this price category and impress me much more than Bistro V.

Ate there about a month ago for a friends birthday. I felt that a post was warranted because in my extensive Birmingham restaurant experience, Bistro V is overpriced and nothing special. Don't understand how anyone could give this place a good review. I got the special; very small piece of fish over a pile of peas, no sauce. It was fresh, but that's all I can say positive about it. Have a cocktail before you leave home as they are absurdly overpriced.

I have eaten at Bistro V 6 times over the past few weeks and each time I was very pleased with the food, the service and the value. I can't wait to return.

I want to give Bistro V more credit, but after 6 visits, it gets a 3-star rating. I've had some great dishes - fried oysters, fried shrimp, fried green tomatoes, and a Mediterranean snapper special over grits, but I've also had a tough batch of scallops, a lackluster order of short ribs, and a really greasy Cajun pasta dish. The inconsistency of the food is enough to make Bistro V a 3 star place, but the wait staff solidifies it. I've been to Bistro V 3 times by myself and have never once been greeted with a smile. In fact, I almost feel like they're wondering why I'm there! We've even been turned away from a half-full restaurant by a guy who said, "look at all these tables we have to seat tonight", as opposed to a polite apology and a "hope to see you soon". The staff doesn't look or act happy to be there, and frankly, it rubs off on me and I'm sure others, as well. I want to stand behind this place, so as soon as they brighten their attitude and resolve the inconsistency in the food, I'm back.

Mmm...delicious! I had blueberry pancakes, that come with 2 big pieces of super tasty bacon. It was a lovely stack of 3 thick, fluffy pancakes with piping hot blueberries tucked away inside. They bring you butter and syrup, too. Then the shrimp and grits bowl was superb. Salty, cheesy, buttery goodness. They put in some real bacon bits in there, cut up cherry tomatoes, and some spinach?. Whatever is all in there, it is the perfect blend of taste. My mom and I shared both of these for brunch on a Saturday, and we both loved it! At first she was saying, "I don't think I want shrimp up here off the coast", to later say, "Wow, this is great". I'm sure most other dishes here are great, too, since most times I drive by there is a pretty big crowd in the parking lot. Brunch is a win here; I'm not sure about the other meals.

We enjoyed dining at Bistro V on a Monday evening for my birthday dinner. We got there during happy hour and enjoyed good prices on beer. For dinner, one person had the Crabcakes on top of Fried Green Tomatoes and the other had Shrimp and Grits. They were both delicious entrees and we ate every bite. The garlic bread that came with the meal was very tasty in the buttery sauce. We had good attention from the wait staff. As it was a Monday evening and early, the restaurant was not crowded at all. Noise was not a problem. It was a good place to celebrate!

We returned at lunch today and it was absolutely perfect. I went for the roast beef po boy which was messy perfection. The sandwich is served open face with fork tender beef, gravy, cheese and topped with fries and rings. It was slap yo mama good. My wife went for the oyster po boy which was spot on. I really like this place.

I have mixed feelings about this place. The food is always good, and I like having one "nice" restaurant in the old Vestavia area. But the service, while always efficient, is never warm and friendly. Smiles just don't occur there very often. The other night my wife and I went there for a quick date night. We chose a bar seat since there were only a few other people there. The waitress was busy enough, but not slammed. After she finally got to us for our drink orders, we took a few minutes to look over the menu. Once she returned with "Are you ready?," my wife had one question; the answer made her decide on something else so she said to me, so do you want this or that? As I was turning to the waitress to tell her, she whipped around, clearly annoyed that we had wasted .02 seconds of her precious time, and walked off to do other things. After about five minutes, she came back with, "Are you ready now?" We bit our bottom lips, ordered and enjoyed our dinner, but not the service. There are too many good new restaurants in the Birmingham area who are trying to emulate the level of service you get a Highland's or Hot and Hot to find this acceptable. At some point, people will move on. Let's hope they wake up, because I do like the place overall.

Today, I had a fantastic lunch at Bistro V in Vestavia Hills. I sat at a nice sidewalk table shaded by an umbrella where I enjoyed a refreshing breeze as I dined. The meal started off with some fresh bread with warm garlic butter. This was a nice, light munchie and didn't overwhelm me until my meal came. On the menu there was a very good selection of salads, sandwiches, and entree dishes. I ordered the fried shrimp po-boy. The shrimp were lightly breaded and perfectly cooked, and the tomatoes and lettuce that dressed the sandwich were farm-fresh. The cocktail sauce for the sandwich had a nice spicy kick to it. Usually a French fry junkie, I decided to try the fried onion stringers for a change of pace and was very glad that I did. These were also lightly breaded and flavorful. Service was great--my food came out quickly and my tea glass was kept filled. I highly recommend Bistro V!

Great lunch spot but beware that it gets really busy. Oyster salad is the bomb though!

I asked for the Pumpkin Pie French Toast, which was on the menu, but apparently hadn't been available since the fall of last year. I got the regular french toast instead. It came with fruit and a side meat, and I asked for sausage. The french toast was a little soggy, the fruit was not fresh, and the sausage was cold. The service was not that great, and the waitress kept playing with her tongue ring.

This is a great little eatery in Vestavia Hills. Very much a Bistro Style cafe. The menu is interesting and had several offerings which were tempting. I had the daily lunch special which was Chicken Pot Pie. It was served with a salad. The CPP was good, very traditional but good. (I expected there to be some up scale twist on the dish) the salad was DELICIOUS!! When I am in the area I will come back and try them again!

Shrimp cooked perfectly. Spinach and tomatoes added to grits not only adds flavor but makes a nice presentation.

Absolute favorite place for brunch!! Always tastes so fresh and the service is wonderful!

I was looking forward to eating at Bistro V after going to the movies. The food was very good BUT the restaurant was so loud that we couldn't even talk to each other. If we go back it will be at lunch not dinner. Wine was very reasonably priced.

I was truly impressed with this place . It will be on my first to visit again when I'm in birmingham

My husband and I have been here several times. We've made reservations before but have also been told that we didn't need to make one. We went there on Feb. 8 between 5:00 and 5:15 to an empty restaurant. We didn't have a reservation and were told that people were coming in at 6:30 with reservations. We understood that. What was absolutely rude was the statement, "You can stay if you don't plan to hang around too long". We're always mindful of people who wait holding a pager at restaurants and make a point to leave ASAP to free our table. To simply tell us that, "reservations are scheduled at 6:30, but you're welcomed to stay since it's only 5:10" would have done the trick. We chose to leave even with an hour and a half to eat, because we simply didn't feel welcomed. We don't know that we will ever return.

Shrimp & Grits = amazing! We had a great time and enjoyed our food thoroughly. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Bistro V puts out above average food over and over again. My wife and I have been there many times and enjoy our diners there very much. I highly recommend the braised short ribs or the paella for dinner.

I don't go to many Bistros but when I do I go to Bistro V. I have only been during their Sunday Brunch menu which includes all the standard Brunch options such as French Toast, Eggs Benedict, and an excellent Poached Egg Plate. At that time they also serve a Seafood Poboy which you can choose either Fried Oysters, Grilled or Fried Shrimp, and Grilled or Blackened Grouper. I had the Fried Shrimp Poboy my most recent visit and it was excellent. My wife had the Bistro Burger and it was cooked to a perfect medium well and was really good. I of course tried a bite. We also got an order of the Shrimp and Grits to share at the table and it was amazing. These guys benefit from having a Seafood Store just a few doors down that they get all their seafood from.

Outstanding meals. We had the Shrimp and grits, the crawfish fettuccine, and Cappelli with shrimp. All were 5 star. Service was also excellent. Would definitely go again.

I cringe everytime I see a menu with an item that lists "alabama goat cheese" as a key ingredient. The rest of the items seem so different and unrelated, its just hard to get a "theme" of the menu here. My wife had the special -- a pan-seared snapper with a seasonal veggie mix. The snapper was good, light, flaky, but certainly could've used a slightly hotter pan and a little more seasoning. Very mild overall which sorta disappointed with a fish thats known for its flavor. The veggies though were fantastic!!! I had the braised red-wine marinated short ribs with potatos and spinach. The ribs themselves were very good, tender, but again, the flavor was a little mild. The real standouts were the hand-cut scallopped potatoes au gratin with parmesan and the spinach with carmelized onions. The main dishes were good...the sides are awesome!!! Overall 4 stars ---- would be 5, but its a little pricey, the atmosphere and bar selections leave a little to be desired. On the plus side --- the staff is very nice!

I went here for lunch and got a vegetable plate that was GREAT!

First time-had been meaning to try--so pleased! My husband and I split the grit cake with shrimp and mushrooms.Crispy, creamy contrasts.Yummy. Next we shared the bibb salad with Maytag, apples and pecans.Dressed with the perfect vinaigrette So good.He loved the fettucine. Said usually when pasta has so many ingredients, he doesn't like one of them, but this was great. Well, my grouper over a bed of succotash was delicious. Fresh, fresh--as in straight from the sea and garden. Innovative combination of veggies. First I thought it had portobello mushrooms in it, then maybe eggplant--no the waiter said it was roasted zucchini--and was it tasty! We shared the peach cobbler--reminded me of clafouti or buckle--mmmm! Witt provided us with great service. One suggestion--lower lighting in the evening would be nice. This dinner was a combination French bistro/Southern grandmother's table--can't beat that

Not going to bother. Have tried twice in the past month to dine, hearing good things. The first time granted we did not have any reservations and walked in about 7. But our son & DIL had been once before and said we did not need reservations that they had walked right in and been seated. This time we were going to make reservations so we called around 4:30 and the phone rang with no answer. My husband let it ring for at least two minutes. He called twice. So we went by about 5:45 pm and were told they were booked with reservations. We told them that we had been trying to call but no one answered. Someone on Facebook had the same problem the day before. While we were standing there someone was making reservations for 7pm. They did offer to seat us at the bar, but with it just being my husband & I would like to sit across from him not next to him. One of the managers came up and heard the conversation and apologized and said that someone should have answered the phone then handed my husband & I one of the General Manager & Owners business cards and said to call anytime. But did nothing about seating us. It may be a good restaurant, but I am not going to spend any more time trying to eat here. There are other places just as good with much better service.
